Annual Global Health, Safety & Environment

Course Overview

The management of risks associated with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) threats to businesses is becoming increasingly complex. In any credible global organization, these risks must be addressed comprehensively at all levels, with strong leadership provided by the Executive Team and consistent oversight by the Board of Directors. A systematic approach is essential to ensure effective risk management and sustainability across all business operations.

History has shown that major accident events often lead to consequences far beyond what management initially anticipates. These incidents can escalate to a level where recovery becomes challenging, both financially and reputationally. The 2010 Deepwater well blow-out accident serves as a prominent example. The company faced a substantial financial penalty due to environmental impacts, which stretched its operational capacity. In addition, the incident resulted in significant personnel casualties and caused lasting reputational damage.

This three-day course is designed to help participants explore the real HSE challenges encountered by Executive Management teams, sub-ordinate managers, and staff in global businesses operating high-hazard facilities. The focus will be on the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments of the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. Participants will gain an understanding of industry-specific HSE management systems designed to address both occupational and process safety hazards.

The course will emphasize the importance of managing risks effectively to achieve control measures that meet the “As Low as Is Reasonably Practicable” (ALARP) standard. It will also highlight the integration of people, processes, and plant in achieving these objectives, ensuring that businesses maintain safety, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
